Building Regulations and Window Energy Ratings
UK Building Regulations
The energy rating of the window is influenced by the window frame, glass type, glazing components and gas filling. Therefore, it's recipe of the whole window construction that influences values. However, other markets require low U-values only achievable using inert gases. Even where regulations can be met without gas filling the units, it may still be more cost effective to gas fill and switch to a less expensive glass.
The worldwide drive for greater energy efficiency has lead to continual changes in Building Regulations in recent years. The current UK requirement for all new and replacement windows is that they achieve a Window Energy Rating (WER) of 'A' to 'C' or a whole window U-value of 1.6 W/m ˛.K. Proposed changes to building regulations suggest that these requirements may shortly change to a minimum requirement of a 'B' rating or whole window U-value of 1.4 W/m ˛.K.
